FAQs

What is collagen?

Connective Tissue: is the tissue that supports and binds or separates organs and tissues in the body; it is made up of extra cellular matrix and cells. Forms of connective tissue include bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, adipose, areolar and elastic tissues (McFerran, 1996).

Why do we need to top our collagen up?

From the age of 25 years (approximately) the body’s ability to produce collagen reduces by 1.5% per year, this is why young people have skin flexibility, softness and resiliency that springs back into place quickly for example when pinched, whereas when you age you lose the elasticity in your skin.

Why should you be over 18 years old?

Children under the age of 18 years, naturally still produce adequate amounts of collagen, although not harmful it would have no benefit.

Can you take anything with Collagen to enhance its take up by the body?

Diet: Firstly you need to maintain a healthy diet.

Water intake: As suggested by BBC Health; adults should drink between one and a half to three litres of water a day.

Vitamin C: The University of Maryland Medical Centre state that Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin needed for the growth and repair of tissues and is necessary to form collagen.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) this is the minimum amount needed by the body to remain healthy for Vitamin C is set 60mg. Annex to Council Directive 90/496/EEC (24 September 1990). Please note that the RDA is the minimum to prevent beriberi (scurvy) – it will not achieve much, nor assist in enhancing your skin so you should be guided by the instructions on the packet. It is advised as Vitamin C Supplements could possible interact with some medications that you should talk to your healthcare advisor first.
In the absence of Vitamin C the body cannot produce its own natural collagen.

Has collagen been tried and tested or approved by any Health Bodies?

Collagen peptides have been marketed and sold for a number of years in Japan to establish an unequalled track record for quality and performance among consumers.

Our collagen product conforms to EU 2000 regulations, UK Trading standards and the Associated Food Standards Agency.

The ingredients and packaging have been reviewed by the Information and Legislation Department, CCFRA in 2008.

How much collagen do I need to eat?

There is currently no RDA (recommended daily allowance) for collagen. This is mainly due to the fact that everyone produces different levels of collagen at different times in life. This could be down to genetics and this may be why some families seem to retain their youth with age. Our collagen product contains 3000mg of collagen peptides in each packet. Our manufacturers advise that you eat up to one packet per day, to top up your collagen levels. Exceeding this amount is not advised due to the sugar contained in the marshmallow element of the product.

How long do I need to take collagen for to notice any benefit?

Since collagen loss is an ongoing process, those who take collagen supplements will not see immediate results. It generally takes about two weeks in order to experience any real difference, and since the results are cumulative, the collagen supplement should be taken on an ongoing basis’.
